Concern regarding climate change and our environment grows each day. Teaching our children how to care for the environment and why we need to do this doesn’t have to be hard. Taking small steps can be fun and can teach our children how to go green and make their world a better place. It may also help them teach their friends how to do the same.
Here are five easy steps to help your child go green.
- Have them help sort the trash – Recycling is a great way to start helping your child make a positive impact on the environment. It is likely they have heard about recycling and possibly have recycling bins at their school. When your child has finished eating or crafting or any other time they have trash, help them sort through what can be recycled and what can’t. You can also help them think about reusing items for other projects. Pretty soon they will get the idea on what can go in the recycling bin and they will start to be more aware of the choices they make when it comes to creating trash.
- Teach them the why’s and how’s of conserving energy – By helping your child become aware of how energy is made and what we use it for they can start to get a grasp on energy consumption. Helping them know what impact creating energy has on the environment as well as teaching them the cost will help them become aware. Remind them to turn off the light when they leave a room, turn off the tap while brushing their teeth or take shorter showers this will help them become aware and form good habits for the future.
- Go on outdoor Adventures – This one will seem like fun for the whole family but can be a teachable adventure too. Go hiking, camping, bike riding or just get outside and immerse the family in nature. Helping your child develop a love for the outdoors and all the living creatures will help them connect with nature and bring a natural understanding as to why we want to protect it.
- Plant a garden – Anyone with a secondary education degree knows that kids love to get dirty. Plant a kid friendly garden in your own yard or even better in a Community Garden. Teaching your child how to grow your own food can set them up for good eating habits and help them understand how good it feels to grow something yourself. This can also be a good time to teach about pesticides and other things that can change the natural eco system.
- Take a trip to a Thrift Store – Do a family clean out and sort things into different piles. You can have a trash pile for things that can’t be reused, a pile for things to upcycle and a pile of things to take to the thrift store. Take the thrift store pile to the thrift store and show your child how things that are not used anymore by them can be used by someone else rather than adding it to the trash pile. They may even find something they like while they are there.
By incorporating these five things into your child’s life you can help them learn how to make a positive impact on the environment and make the world a cleaner and greener place for them to live in.
